there is a hundred answers to this one ..so here is the easy one ..assuming you have a level concrete foundation ..you lay one brick after the other from the start of the wall to the end but after laying 3 bricks at one end you the break the bond by cutting a brick in half and laying on top of first brick followed by two more bricks ..the on third coarse start with a full brick ..and so on try keeping the mortar beds even ..then repeat the other end of wall ...then run a string line from one corner to the other ..straightening the bricks you have laid to run with the string line ..the brick beds should be even an you should get 4 courses to 300mm in height ...if high ..tighten the joints ..if low ..thicken ....if a single skin wall then you should build in pillars every 6 feet ..or the wall will fall over ..at all times you should be checking that the wall is upright with your 4 foot level ..the pillars need to be a full bricks width ..these are made by turning the stretcher brick to a header at the pillar .. i never said it was going to be easy!

Start buy providing a footer for the wall to sit on it should be level. Step brick both ends a few courses then run a string line between each course for a guide to keep the course straight. Consult the web for footer specs they vary.

No easy or straight forward, easy to follow instructions for this one! However....Do NOT buy the "Brickies Mate" off any shopping channel.
Whilst these do in fact give a smooth, even and regular bed and perp to work to, it is the excess of mortar, as it compressed by the weight of the brick, forcing into the frogs etc that give the wall its strength. Use one of these and your wall will not last long at all!

To build any wall you would have to learn to be a bricklayer which means getting a job as a builders bricklayer if only to learn the know how,and just for a short while. most men I know who build brick walls are ex-builders.

Start with a good steel reinforced concrete foundation. It should be wider than the wall, and proportional to the height of the wall (i.e. taller walls need a wider, and often deeper foundation).
That'll keep you busy for a while, and during your breaks, read one of those "How To" books or websites, where you can learn various bricking patterns, mortaring thickness, mortar striking and curing, brick levelling and alignment, and how to clean uncured mortar off brick faces.
It's fun once you get the hang of it, but there's a lot more to it than you might think.

If I can do it, anyone can. Or, just get the stuff and leave it outside and wait for the expert neighbours to walk past to tell you the best way of building a wall. Act dim and then watch them do it.
