Yes, it bugs the crap out of me. Someone even went as far as to thank me in an email, they sounded overjoyed. But they never bothered to choose a Best Answer.
I hate the whole Voting for Best Answer thing too. Awhile ago, someone asked about a song, I promptly answered that the song was "Tempted" by a group called Squeeze. Someone else answered something that was completely wrong, so I added a link to a site that agreed with me. Somehow, this answer got voted by others as Best Answer, and it is completely wrong.
I'm a little bitter obviously, but that is just one example of 100.
Thats right Jill48! the whole thumbs up and thumbs down thing bothers me, I can see if I am giving an opinion, and someone disagrees. But when I am stating a fact, and can back it up, I don't understand how approval or disapproval enters into it.

I don't mind if my answer isn't chosen for best answer; I may think it was the best, but the person who asked the question may not think so. What I do mind is when people give your answer a thumbs down after you seriously tried to help someone but then they gave thumbs up to idiots who answer with ignorant remarks.

Its up to the person that asks the question, even if your answer is sticking out to you it might not stick out to them, do you really answer to get best answer are because you like the thought that you might be helping someone???

well, yeah.....but there are heaps of people who feel like that, and not everyone can get the best answer for every question they answer. more than one person answers for one question!
if i could give a best answer to more than one person, i would.
