I am planning on building a new computer from compatible parts, but i am not sure if i should try it or not. I know how to put it all together, but im not real sure about installing the operating system or altering the BIOS. From what I understand, you basically Turn the computer on and then insert the OS disc and follow instructions from there. Any info?

Building your own computer is actually very easy if you have previous knowledge of computer hardware.

Yes you basically just hook it all up and when you first boot it up go into the BIOS and set it up[ the way you want.....
Set the Clock make sure that your hard drive(s) and CD/DVD Drive(s) are detected and floppy etc if you have one. Then check and make sure that the ram you installed is being read as the correct speed and size, (there might be a conflict). Then set up your video most BIOS will have an option for whatever type of interface there is on the Motherboard... i.e. AGP / PCI / PCI-E etc.. make sure that is set up right.

One of the most important things that you need to do is setup you boot sequence. CDROM first then HardDrive second.
That will have it check for a bootable cd (like the OS installation disk) first before trying to boot to the hard drive.

There are more alterations to the BIOS that you can do but that is basically all you need to do to get up and running.

exit and save changes

then reboot with the installation CD for your operating system and just follow the directions. Any other questions let me know...

First decide on the Operating system you are going to install.

Make sure that all the components are compatible for that operating system.

This is especially true for any Microsoft operating system based on the NT Platform (NT 3.5 and 4; Windows 2000; Windows XP; Vista OS)

You will require drivers that are compatible with the OS you choose.

Bios information should come with the Motherboard. You can also go to the motherboard manufacturer's website for more detailed information.

Make sure you thoroughly research all components after you have decide on the OS for compatibility and driver signing.

Good Luck.

That's exactly right.
You will only have to edit the BIOS to make sure that it boots to your CD rom drive first. How to do this depends on the mother board you have. Check for instructions for boot device priority.
