Because wave action would uncover them, and because they need the heat of the sun to hatch.

Some scientist speculate that they do that to ensure that their eggs arent swept by the tide and to make sure that the sand is soft enough so the hatchlings can come out but resistant enough so it doesnt fall over and crush the eggs.

Survival of the fittest.

The fittest turtles will survive and make it to the water, therefore only the turtles with good genes/characteristics will survive to reproduce.

Also so tides etc won't uncover the eggs.

so they don't get buried deeper and deeper under more sand when the tide comes in; and brings sand with it.
