when it gets ratty looking , it gets put in laundry for the dogs bath, or working on the car, mopping up spots here and there, I've still got towels that were wedding presents being used in some capacity. The final use is grease rags, those have hit the end of the line.

I have some pretty old towels.... I will use them until they get holes in them or are threadbare... Then they go into a rag bucket and get used to bathe the dog or spills... I will then "maybe" throw them away if they are stained or torn.. I just had to throw away all my towels since we had a flood of raw sewage in the basement and I panicked and threw all my towels on the floor to soak up the water and try to keep it from leaving the laundry room.... ! So, I got all new towels...

If they are stained. If they don't seem to absorb water anymore. If they smell funny no matter how many times I wash them. If I did something too icky with them. If I'm in a mood. But I have lots of towels that are almost as old as I am.
I f you want to get rid of them, donate them to a tag sale or a shelter and go get new ones.

When my towels get worn out or ratty looking they go to the garage and we use them to clean equipment or wash the vehicles.

I don't have a time frame. I will judge by how they look. If they look really worn and dirty, I will use them for the floor or something else.

You never throw away towels. They are considered toxic after you clean your bunghole with them.

When I start to see them fray, Then I cut them up for rags. As long as they are still good and still absorbent I keep them.
