I'm not pregnant yet, nor have I been before. I was just wondering, did everyone take some kind of prenatal class?
If you did, which did you prefer and why? Did it really help you out in the end?
And if you didn't, do you wish you had?

Yes i took the classes. they were weekly classes that i started at 6 months. The classes were offered by the hospital i chose to give birth at. i honestly recommend those classes. i learned a lot about the process of giving birth. It was my first child so i had no clue at all. you learn many trick to help you relax during you labor. if i didn't attend those classes i would be going nuts when i labor. but i feel so content that i attended them weekly as i knew what was going to happen.

Bradley Method of Natural Childbirth - it helped me to focus on what my body knows how to do naturally. I had no fear or apprehension about labor and delivery. I went through 24 hours of labor, 9 of which I pushed, and never once did I think that the pain was any where near unbearable. It made the experience wonderful.

I personally needed to know the ins and outs to be comfortable with the whole process - I don't understand how so many people go into something so life changing and important completely uneducated about what is going on with their body.

Before you decide on a type of class to take - determine what kind of birth experience you want to have. If you want drugs and are willing to do every thing the doc says no questions asked - take a hospital class. If you want something more natural or if you want to be more educated to take an active role in your health care - look to classes outside the hospital setting.

Now a days most hospital require you to take prenatal classes. I was one that had to. I didn't really have a choice as to what kind of class I took. They are all pretty similar in that they show you breathing techniques, a tour of the hospital, anesthesia options, etc. I think they do help in a way. I felt more comfortable when the big day came because I already knew what to expect.

Some will say you can learn all you need from reading a few books. I agree that there is a lot of useful info out there but there is more to prenatal classes.

First you get to actually practice the techniques you learn with your partner. Second, you get to interact with other couples who are due around the same time you are and you can create lasting friendships. last but not least, you get the answer to questions you may have and others that you may not have thought of. Your partner will benefit also.

I did take a class from the birth center. However, we used the Bradley method. The classes at the hospital are all similar, because they want you to fit in with their procedures. The hospital classes are usually Lamaze. Bradley classes are totally different from Lamaze. It helped me trememdously. I did not have severe pain or any cramping with my labor because of what I learned. I have had four kids and the Bradley method worked every time. My husband took my picture during a contraction in transition. It looked like I was sleeping. I did not have any pain medication with my births.

I didn't take one, and I'm glad I didn't. I think if I had known the ins and outs of labor and the birthing process, it would've scared me out of my mind and I would've worried about what could have gone wrong. When it got to the point of labor and delivery, it was fine. Not once did it ever cross my mind, "Gosh, I should've taken that childbirth class." Breathing, pushing, focusing on something other than contractions....they're all pretty much instinctual.

I didn't get to take any classes. I went into labor early and was on bedrest. I did ok without the classes. I watched a lot of babystory and other shows like that so I got the basics of it all.

I didn't, and I'm not terribly fretted about it. However, I'm very cool under pressure (though I go to pieces over little things...), so I wasn't worried.

If you're planning to deliver in a hospital, you might ask if they offer these classes. Usually they do, and for free.

When you do conceive, you will have a wonderful time before you. Don't overdo, and don't worry! Your first duty will be to your baby, so you have to take care and not stress when you don't have to.

God bless you.
