You are not an idiot. It was an accident, and accidents happen all the time, so stop beating yourself up about it. The best thing you can do is try to be a considerate, alert driver, and when you have kids someday and one of them wrecks the car, remember how you felt today and be merciful to them.

P.S. When my younger brother turned 16, I was 33, and I gave him my old red sports car as a gift. He totaled it three weeks later. He was devastated and felt like a total loser, but he's gone on to live a full, productive life, and he's made so many other mistakes since then that I have tons of other material to use to make fun of him and hold over his head.

I blame your parents for letting a totally novice driver take a friend with her to the mall the same day she gets her license. Young drivers should not have distractions like friends in the vehicle with them when they're so new to driving. That being said, she has every right to call and file a claim on your insurance. You damaged her car. Please pay more attention while driving and don't take friends along with you if they're going to distract you. You could injure or even kill someone. It is a big responsibility to be in control of a car. Act accordingly.

Call me what you want, but I know how to drive! Wouldn't miss someone turning left while I'm turning right. Did you look both ways? You want us to feel sorry for you because you were negligent? And what a good girl you are, poor thing, calling someone you don't even know a ***** because she pointed out the obvious. I wasn't rude to you, just gave you some helpful tips. And you did say "Went to the mall with a friend." That leads one to assume the friend was with you.

An 18-year-old girl T-boned my husband, myself, and my 4-year-old son because she ran right through a stoplight. Not paying attention. She could have killed us, but thankfully we had airbags. That's why I said these things. I don't think you deserve a pity-party, I think the other driver does! If you don't like it, stay the heck out of the car, then. You obviously aren't responsible enough to handle driving if you can't take constructive criticism.

It sounds like your first car wreck was a pretty gentle experience. Yes, other people get in wrecks sometimes. You did the right thing by exchanging insurance information and telling your mom. In the future, you might also want to call police to the scene. When something difficult like this happens it can wear you out. Hopefully tomorrow you'll be feeling better about the whole thing.

I have been in car accidents too! My words of wisdom are these: You get better as you go! When I first started driving, I was very careless ( not that you were!) and I got in a couple of fender benders. But now having 4 years of driving under my belt, I am a lot more aware of what is going on around me and a ton more cautious. While I agree that it is always imperative to be very attentive to driving, it's a lot easier when you know what the consequences are! Learn from this, and keep your head up! You are ahead of a lot of people who do dangerous things on the road simply to get to their destination faster!

OK, I won't call you an idiot, if that's what you want.

It's OK to think it though, isn't it?
