LMAO!!! Are you serious???????? St. Louis is way way way better than Brian Gionta. You can NOT compare these two guys. Just cause they're the two shortest players in the league doesn't mean they're both equal at hockey.
~
Why? OK, I'll tell ya why, last year St. Louis had 43G and 59A for 102 points. Gionta had only 25G and 20A for 45 points. Over the past 3 years St. Louis has 112G, 145A for 257 points in 244 games. Over the past 3 years Gionta has 94G, 69A for 163 points in 219 games. So in the past 3 years St. Louis' points per game is 1.05 ppg. Gionta's ppg is only 0.74. St. Louis' goals per game over the last 3 years is 0.46 gpg. Gionta's gpg is only 0.42. In his entire career St. Louis has 422pts. in 522 games, that's a 0.81 points per game average. Gionta in his career has only 199pts. in 310 games, that's only a 0.64 points per game average. As you see, St. Louis beats out Gionta in every meaningful statistical category. Also, St. Louis won the Art Ross trophy (most points in a season) in 03-04. Gionta on the other hand has never won any individual NHL awards ever. It's very easy to see why St. Louis is better than Gionta. Besides, St. Louis plays for the Lightning. Bolts rule!

Defensively: Brian Gionta
Offensively: Marty St. Louis
Leadership: Marty St. Louis
Tough to judge though since Gionta plays for NJ...a defense-first team...whereas Tampa is all about offense.

The two players are very similar, NHL Scouting rates Gionta as the better of the two. Unfortunately he plays in a stifling defensive system so we don't really know what he is capable of.
I think if Gionta were to play on a team like Tampa or Pittsburgh, we would see big numbers. Similarly, if St. Louis was on any team aside from Tampa, you would see a reduction in his numbers.
If I had to choose one right now, I'd choose Gionta, 4 years younger, a little stronger in the corners, a lot better defensively as well.

Gionta.. I like St. Louis, but Gionta is a better more rounded player. You have to know defense to play in New Jersey. Defense is something the Lightning still haven't figured out yet. You will see Gionta's numbers pick up. They almost have to for that team to get anywhere this year. You people seem to think the Devils are just going to roll over and play dead.. They still have Brodeur. Elias, White and Madden.. They will have to pick up the defense but do NOT count them out of the chase. They still have Pandolfo, they still have Parise, Zajac.. they have the nucleus still there. IF you think they are just going to give up think again. This team has TOO MUCH pride to quit.

These two guys are going to put up similar numbers within the next couple of years, but if I had to pick from this point forward, I'd take Gionta.
He's got a lot more miles left on his career and has proven to be a highly effective trigger man to this point.
EDIT: Not suggesting Gionta is better TODAY, literally. I guess if that is the actual question, you already have your answer from the other incredulous responses.

The only thing that St. Louis doesn't have going for him is his "streakyness"...if he was more consistent...he could be one of the best forwards on the ice...
