for example, you don't have to do anything in particular to gain weitht, i.e. eating any specific foods. All you might ultimately have to do is just like eat normally and excercize/live your life normally, and in doing so you could gain weight. But even if you did not gain weight you would not lose weight, either unless you altered what you ate/how you excercized. In essence, you were not even trying to gain weight, and yet you did anyway, without even trying. When it comes to LOSING weight, however, you actually have to do certain things, i.e. eating certain foods which are almost always impossible to come by and expensive, and excercizing regularily to even lose any weight at all. And in order to maintain your weight loss you have to continue to eat the expensive foods and excercize like that, like you can't just eat normal inexpensive foods and live your life normally or else you will gain the weight back and/or you will not lose any more.

So why is it that you have to engage in specific practices in order to LOSE weight (eating specific foods, engaging in specific excercize, e.t.c.) yet you do NOT have to do anything in particular (i.e. you could just be eating what you normally eat/doing what you normally do) to gain and/or maintain your weight?

You look different while at a certain weight, either fat, skinny, thin or at a particular weight that looks not just even, but balanced to your body... Too much weight gain, your clothes don't fit, your legs may rub, or you just feel heavy. After a while you will adjust to that size, but that does not mean your body will except the size.. You will get pains here and there, you knee will ache,or you will ache all over, or have problems breathing by just walking up a flight of stairs.. When your a child you eat all you want, so long as your that active child and just burn the food off, if not, you will gain just like any other child or adult.. So if a child can eat, and then go out and burn it off, while shouldn't a adult do the same.. More so a adult should do this, because of the slowing of the metabolism, because you have reached your peak in growth both up and outward. So all now you can do is to grow even more outward, and this is called excess fat, or weight. So to answer you question, i just did.. So you can either get up, go and do some life giving exercise, or just stop eating..

I believe what you are asking is why is it soo easy to gain, yet so difficult to lose. The answer is your engaging in an activity that you enjoy so you do not take into account the amount of calories that you are consuming. But if you kept a log you would see that while you are gaining you are actually consuming more calories than you are burning. So if you are aware of what you are consuming you do not have to buy the expensive foods that you are talking about rather you just need to balance what you burn with what you consume. For example my daughter likes the double cheese burger and small fry from Mc Donalds and at 2 dollars I consisder this cheap yet loaded with calories, so what do I do I split it with her. Niether she nor I need the 1000+ calories in that meal yet we both enjoy partaking in it from time to time. By not consuming the entire meal we maintain our wieght. Basically the more you eat, the more hungary you stay. So go ahead and get that pizza or cheese burger, but instead of eating the normal amount slow down and really enjoy it, and only give yourself half of what you would normally.

Well in a sense this is true but there are parts of it that are also false. I mean, normally people who have to change what they eat etc, in order to lose weight are consuming more calories than they burn. This isn't just from going to the gym or doing some other physical work, but from the activities carried out in everyday life. So when people gain the weight or fail to lose any, its simply because their lifestyle doesn't facilitate the burning of the calories that they intake.
So the idea is that you can eat the foods that you want, you will just have to ensure that you are in fact burning off all the calories that you are taking in.
What expensive food are you referring to?

Actually, there are some people who don't gain weight when they don't pay attention to their intake. The basic thing has to do with how many calories are going in and how many calories the person is using. If a person naturally uses many calories because he/she has a high metabolism or exercises a lot, then that person can eat more calories without gaining weight. If a person wants to lose weight, though, he/she has to take in fewer calories than he/she is using; the body will then get the additional calories to use from its stores of fat. To lose weight, then, you have to either eat fewer calories, or burn more.

Thats actually a pretty good question. My idea is that what we think of as a normal life isn't really normal. We evolved to walk 15 to 20 miles a day as hunter gatherers. Our species spent millions of years living this way and we are completely adapted to it. In the last approximately 75 years we have progressed so far so fast that our physiology hasn't had nearly enough time to adapt to the fact that we don't have to work hard (physically) any more.

Actually to loose weight you do not have to eat expensive foods. Of course you have to eat less and excercise more.
