The ACLU defends people who are definitely racist, but their defense is on free speech grounds and not on racist grounds. Defending a racist by providing arguments in favor of racism would be racist (see definition 1).However, defending a racist by citing their right to free speech would not be racist.

The ACLU has defended racist groups who wanted to do marches and protest, and they defended their right to do so. Smith v. Collin
Even though the people they defended are despicable, still the whole point of defending free speech is that the even if the speech is unpopular, wrong, ignorant, and hatefull it is still entitled to protection.

Also the current executive director of the ACLU Anthony D. Romero, both parents are Puerto Rican.

They may not be racist but they are pro Islamic religious freedom and anti-Christian religious freedom.
