I'm with Toshiba all the way. Though get an Intel Pentium instead of an AMD Turion. (Pentium's a better processor)
When you're looking at a basic laptop for a college student, you want to look at the RAM and chip. That's what I based on when I got mine. It's a Toshiba Satellite, Intel Pentium dual-core processor T2080, 1024MB DDR2 SDRAM, 120GB HDD. . I got it at around $700 before tax.
Are you sure that Sony's around $800? The ones I find are around $1000...

needless to say , Sony is your first decision ....yet whilst sony is merely too costly and toshiba is plenty extra inexpensive , you are able to evaluate toshiba .... If the two the cost is reasonable , then i strongly propose you to purchase a Sony because of the fact Sony has extra helpful high quality and extra helpful technologies ... it extremely is a appropriate computing gadget in case you employ it purely for excel , going surfing and those favourite stuff .... :)

In my opinion, Toshiba is better than Sony. You're better off getting the Toshiba Satellite A215-S4697.

I'm a computer consultant and I say...stay as far away from Sony as you can. They had some sever mfg. problems a while back and did nothing to help 1,000s of Sony computer users. I won't go into details. I have a Toshiba Satellite M45-S355 with XP Pro and it's faster than blazes. A real great machine.
Good Luck!

I'd go Toshiba over Sony. Sonys tend to be a little more proprietary and difficult to support.
