Liza, I've had a form of IBS plus non-ulcer dyspepsia since I was 21. I am now 36. I can go through long periods of feeling okay and at other times, especially times of emotional excitement or stress, I will keep wanting to throw up, gagging, stomach discomfort/bloating, diarrhea. At other times I am constipated. Doctors don't know what causes this and it is possible to be misdiagnosed. I am not certain I was diagnosed correctly. It does put a dampner on my life - for instance, my bf wanted me to visit him abroad and I didn't partly because I knew all the excitement and travelling would make me unwell. We are not together now and that is one of the reasons.

My answer sounds so mundane, I'm ashamed to add it. First, I can tell this is devastating to you. I think I'd have to doctor shop a bit are there any support groups.
So is your life filled with stress and do you repress your anger and don't address problems when they come up. Just wondering.
Then there's your diet. I hope you are not eating fast foods, and highly processed prepared foods. Stay away from white bread and baked good that you buy. Make sure you eat 3 balanced meals a day and a couple of snacks of apples, carrots, yogurt, something like that (if you think your body can handle it). I think you might study nutrition a bit or see a nutritionist. I hope you don't think I'm trying to simplify your problem. I don't even know what I'm talking about.
My step granddaughter was taught to hold her poop. When she finally went, the diameter of her stools was so big it would clog the toilet. The first time I saw it, I couldn't believe it. Now she has IBS.

Believe me... it's a lot more common than you think...
I had IBS for about 7 years back in my twenties. It isn't really diagnosed by internal tests like an MRI, so those won't help you here... IBS is really all about the effects you see from the outside, like how bad the cramps are, how often you need to use the bathroom, and what you go through when you do...
You can help the nasty parts somewhat by experimenting with different foods. Usually you can learn what types of food will trigger an episode. You might have to adjust WHEN you eat to avoid having episodes while at school. I was in college for most of my time with IBS and had to avoid fatty foods while at school.
Eat lots of fiber! I took fiber supplement pills and that helped a lot. Another thing that helped me quite a bit was the suppositories you use for hemorrhoids. I used the generic version of Preperation H once or twice a day during the worst times, and they help quiet things down. I don't know why they helped, and neither did my doctor, but they did.
One trick I figured out for myself helps when you're on the toilet and having the cramps... Place your hands flat against your lower abdomen and gently press in. Keep your upper body rigid, but move it around in circles just using your abdominal muscles. Make the circles as wide as you can without falling off the seat...
In nursing school we are taught to walk patients around to get their bowels moving after surgery. The circling on the toilet seat mimics the benefit you get by walking around. It help things move along and makes the episode shorter and more tolerable.
Don't drop out of school over this!!!! You can learn to make it a little easier on yourself instead. For future semesters, look at what time of day your long lectures are going to be, and choose your courses to work around whenever your episodes are at their worse. You might not want to take as many courses at one time though... Stress makes IBS worse (or even be the main cause of it), and a reduced class load might reduce your stress. Don't go to zero though... you need your education, and it's always hard to go back if you leave school for a longer time... I know, believe me!!!
You will get through this! It will end, and it can get better!

I know how you feel you always worried that you'll get a upset stomach if you go out to eat or if you are at school. I'm really embarrassed when this happens to me. I hate it when this happens to me when me and my boyfriend go out it's just embarrassing so I also have Peto-bismo or some sort of anti diarrhea medicine . It an embarrassing condition just remember you are not alone in this.

Have you had your gallbladder checked? If it's unhealthy, you'll have lots of intestinal problems. Or could you be suffering from intestinal spasms? If so, there are medications to help this...Bentyl is one. There are even spinal problems that cause IBS so you could check into this with an orthopedist.
