I just bought an Nvidia 8500GT for my rig. I have the latest drivers and all my normal work load handles fine. But if I start any source engine game the screen locks. I can move the mouse ok but I cannot access anything. I've already reformatted and still the same issue.

Specs:
AMD athalon 64 X2 3800+
2 Gigs of G.Skill RAM
Biostar 6100 Mobo
Nvidia 8500GT video card
Creative Sound blaster Audigy sound card

Does your power supply have at least 16 amps on the +12V rail? The 8500GT draws about 40watts on the +12V rail at full load. When doing 2D or video, 8500GT is not at full load. 3D graphics in games bring it to FULL LOAD. It seems that at full load, it is making your power supply unstable.
