We all know the question: are we nice or violent by nature? Or something like that...

Anyways, I think that we're violent by nature. Lets assume that we weren't civilized. Reproduction would increase the population upwards...if two adults had just one kid (which, they'd probably have more, anyways), there'd be three people instead of two. Apply this to, lets say, a million people. How would nature offset that? By making us violent. The stronger would instinctively kill the weak to get a better chance at food/the more dominiate females, and it would also speed along evolution.

I was just theorizing today in Chemistry class..

Anyways, tell me what you think.

We are. In is the nature of us as human beings. We have complex minds and can use them. Were we not civilized it is the survival of the fittest. Kill or be killed in some cases.

Either/or thinking is generally classed as black and white thinking. The creation of a false dilemma. Understanding violence begins with understanding the underlying emotional states associated with the actions. Jealousy, anger, greed, revenge, etc. all lead to an escalation into open hostility.

Violent by nature merely excuses us from any responsibility to the actions that we carry out. I'm sorry that I killed, it was my nature and I have no control over it. Likewise, I'm sorry that I killed, it was my environment and I have no control over it.

What both theories share is the abdication of responsibility of the individual for their actions. Changing the question is also helpful. What causes violence can be replaced by "who causes violence?"

I think this is a survival trait. Early humanity had it very rough and if you weren't able to beat off the wild animals and the enemy your DNA died out. So, only the DNA of the toughest with the best reflexes and brain power remained in the gene pool. However, it is hard to believe that today with so many dim wits around.

I think there is good in everyone. It's just that for some it is harder to find because of what they have been taught from childhood.
