That's a thought provoking question. There are so many that contributed to our history in a variety of ways, but one that always fascinated me was Baron von Stueben, a Prussian officer who assisted the Continental Army under General George Washington. Von Stueben took a very ragged, untrained volunteer "army", in a very bleak time and place during the Revolution, and instilled esprit de corps, discipline, and leadership in the soldiers through his training of drill and ceremonies, something that up to that time had not occured with any regularity. His knowledge of military affairs and willingness to share with Washington and his staff quite frankly strengthened the resolve of the officers and cheered up the men when they realized that they could indeed be the equal or better of the British Army. I believe firmly that without von Stueben, we probably would have lost the Revolution - he just doesn't recieve the credit that he is entitled to by this country.

Alexander Hamilton is a good start - he was born in Nevis to unwed parents yet was arguably the most brilliant of the founding fathers. John Paul Jones is another, a natural child of Scottish parents. Later in the 19th century Alexis de Touqueville's articles on the American experience helped forge stronger ties to Europe for the country when it was still in it's relative infancy.

LaFayette and Kosciusko are the first two who come to mind.
Our history has been greatly influenced by many more people who never set foot on American soil---too numerous to mention.

West Africans who were brought over here through slavery.
And the true Americans were the Native American Indians. So I don't really understand your question. Technically we would all be "non-americans".
Let's not go stealing history as well.
History is not land. You can conquer it all you want and change it's name but you can't change what it was.
