Never in my entire life have I seen a female pizza delivery person. Why is that?

They exist. I've seen a few.
I suppose the obvious answer is that women are afraid of being raped. I have to admit, the few women pizza deliverers I have seen were tall, heavy, and manly looking, and homely.....not exactly what mosts rapists have in mind, I suppose. My last pizza delivery was delivered by (what I suppose was) a girl.....????
For awhile in college I delivered pizzas. It is a pretty awful job (people suck, generally) and even when tips are good the pay is still lousy. When tips are bad the pay is lousier.

As a female who has been a pizza deliverer and a manager, I think there are a number of reasons.
If you walk into a pizza parlor, invariably the servers and counter help tend to be women and the drivers are male. It's not deliberate but it always seems to fall that way. I've worked at all the big ones at some point and they all had the same reaction when I wanted to drive..."why would you want to drive when you could answer the phones, make the food and interact with the customers?" Women are thought to be able to communicate with people better so if there is a problem in the store, that's who is going to handle it. It's the whole "women stay home and men go out" thing. I was twenty when I started driving and they would really discourage me because "the pizza bags are heavy or it's not safe for you to drive in that area at night or what would happen if your car stopped?" They would even schedule me to drive the daytime and pull me off the road at dusk to work inside.
So there is a perception that women are in danger if they are driving. What people don't realize is that as a result, the women at the store make less money....on average our drivers would clear 10-20 a night after putting gas in their car. Over the course of a month that's 200-400$.
The thing is no one really thought about it till I pointed it out. I was lucky enough to have a car, have lived in the "so called" rough area and I told them the bag weight was just BS. They let me drive! And jaws would drop when they opened the door because they weren't expecting a girl. Definitely not a black girl in a vw bug. ( I live in central california)
So the only answer I can give is that no one ever stops to think about it..instead they ask you can you answer phones and type 50wpm. And I don't think it's deliberate, it's just one of those assumptions we make every day when we see people. We just slot them into our expectations and we slot ourselves as well. And everyone gets shortchanged along the way: the guys who don't get those customer service skills and the girls who don't make that extra 20 a night!
Now though I see girls deliver all the time..and yes I do tip them a little more than I would a guy! When girls would come apply they started asking them if they would want to drive and the younger ones did. No problems with the tires or the rough neighborhood and my boss claims that girls will call when they get lost......( I never did though) So that's my view.
Oh and on the whole tipping thing. TIPS is actualy an acronym:
To Insure Prompt Service!

p.s. I just saw some of the previous answers which mentioned going into a customer's house. The driver is never supposed to go inside, even if invited unless that had been previously arranged. Once you cross the doorstep both the family and the company are opened up to liability issues. That's one of the big no-no's of delivery along with speeding and no seat belt.

I don't think it is lack of ability to perform the job, it is more like lack of applicants. I have seen several female delivery drivers, but they are outnumbered by males at most places. We had some very good female delivery drivers at the pizza store I worked at. We also had some very bad MALE drivers that couldn't tell a fully cooked pizza apart from raw dough, couldn't find an address to save their life, and couldn't add money with a calculator. Like I said, it's not that women cannot perform the job, it is that less women apply for the position.

When I was looking for an evening job so my husband could be home with our son I was going to apply for one of our local pizza places to deliver them, and then on the news was a story about a pizza delivery guy that had been attacked and almost died, so my husband didn't want me to do that. I think it is just too dangerous for too low pay.

The main reason being safety. I would not feel safe going to a complete stranger's house. Most people invite a delivery person into their house. That would pose a serious risk to a single female. Not one person I asked would go into a complete stranger's house.

there are ..we have one where we live but its a more risky job and can put girls in a risky situation...ie...dropping pizza off at a sex offenders house..

there isnt a town where pizza is delievered (really small towns usually do not have delievery at hand) that doesnt have a registered sex offender...if the girl were to be molested on the job i cant even begin to imagine what the pizza place would go thru

I think it has to do with women going from door to door at night really. my coworkers daughter became a pizza delivery girl and she was mugged. i would guess it would depend on the area but i think alot of places think its not safe. im not saying its right or wrong i just think thats the way it is.

Well, we have female pizza delivery people in my area. In fact, she just brought me my Pizza last night. I think they send her out only to "regulars" who know her so that she doesn't get mugged.

There are some here and there but the problem really is there arent many female managers. So, once the dusche-bag managers see there is a female driver they just keep her in the back making pizzas....

Oh come on!!! I've had pizza delivered to my house by a woman quite a few times!
Fact is, though, it's not a good paying job, and most women have sense enough to get a better one!
