will a 240watt power supply work in a emachine desktop computer?

i have a 250 watt in my emachine but the mouse lite comes on and nothing else happens why?

Most likely yes if your PC is just using integrated graphics. BUT check first your power button switch. It might be defective. If the mouse light turns ON, the +5Vsb output of power supply is working.

Sadly, the wattage requirement of most computers continues to go up and up.

300watts was typical of the 90s. But 400 and now 500 watts is becoming more typical, especially if you have big graphix cards running on the computer.
