Well, she makes an easy $20.hr. The waitress makes LESS THAN MINIMUM wage. She's cheap.
The fact is, if nobody tipped, waitresses would have to make at LEAST minimum wage, which would drive up the cost of running the restaurant considerably, which would raise the price of what you're eating considerably. That's why you can pay eight dollars for a decent meal at a restaurant, instead of $15 or more.
Tipping is a much fairer system, it let's you reward service you think is good instead of paying bad price for full service anyway. It also makes the waiters work harder to please you at a restaurant.
Bottom line, if you don't like the tipping system: eat at a restaurant that doesn't expect tips. Hope you like McDonald's! Your friend is a cheapskate!

i don't think it makes you a cheap person. I used to be a waitress and i don't agree in tipping. Why should the customers pay for the server's job it should be up to the restaurant to pay their employees. Whoever made up the stupid tipping rule anyways? So many people are turning down dining at expensive restaurants because the feel like the money they are shelling out to the waitress can be an extra plate of lobster. Not to mention the taxes for example dinner for two 100.00 x 5% tax (massachusetts rate)x20% tip= 126.00. that $26.00!!

Waitresses do work very hard and the pay sucks. But thats not the customers fault. There are some places where the servers are so rude and unpleasant and still the owners are still chasing you down asking for a 15% tip. There is something wrong there.

There was point where every place that you go where you see a gratuity jar next to every register, Those places get paid regular wages and they want tip for what making u a coffee and putting ur donut in a bag?

Tipping should not feel like it's mandatory.

Considering most waitresses income is based on their tips, yes it is wrong. Besides if you got good service why not tip, even if its a dollar-it maybe be the extra dollar she needed for her kids lunch or gas home. Waitresses have a stressful job, and not all of them are teenagers wanting some spending money, some are mothers, single mothers and sadly they only get paid enough to barely get by. Most restaurants only pay bare minimum to a waitresses, and that's too only make up for any tips she did not receive. I always pay a tip, unless I get crappy service, by crappy I mean they didn't even bring me a fork, or offer me a to go box when I am the only customer in the place. Tell your friend I will give her a tip, next time she sees a woman come in who looks 10 yrs older than she actually is, and she is so sick she can barely walk, remind her that may very well be the waitress that she didn't tip, who because her income is low cannot afford health insurance, therefore she has ended up in the e.r/hospital because she let it go too long. Just so you know NO I'm not a waitress, I just feel like your friend is CHEAP!!!!!!!

Don't listen to your friend, she's a cheap skate!!!!!!! The waiters/waitresses get paid a very minimal wage and rely on tips, plus they get no benefits to speak of, in MOST cases. Your nurse friend probably gets 10-15 times the regular hourly pay of them, not to mention benefits. You should always tip 15-17% or SO of your bill, maybe 20-25% if service is really good. It's customary and they depend on it.

Waitressing is a bloody hard job.
On your feet all shift.
Dealing with painful customers & egotistical chefs.
The pay is terrible in the USA for a waitress.
A nurse is paid enough to pay the bills.
Waitressing is a job that you need no degree for & can usually fit in around raising children so is attractive to single parents.
I think her attitude stinks. If she enjoyed the meal & the servise was good then she should tip & be thankful that she was lucky enough to be able to study nursing & get a good job.

It is just traditional to tip certain service oriented jobs, which usually only get minimum wage. Nurses on the other hand, make a good salery, and don't need to rely on tips. If a waitress hustles, and gives good service then they deserve a tip. If they ignore your needs, or make you wait too long then they don't deserve much of a tip, or maybe none at all.

She is totally wrong for thinking like that. She gets paid a wage that allows her quite a nice life. This is because she went to college. Wait staff can be a nursing student having to pay tuition and since the wages are very poor, they must rely on tips. Of course if the service is poor, you are allowed to tip poorly in dissatisfaction.

Uummm...because wait staff gets paid next to nothing. They are expected to earn most of their living through tips. Something to remember, they don't get to keep all of it either. They have to split their tips with others, at least in some restaurants. Don't forget, they have to report their tips and file taxes on them! Another thing to think about, if you use plastic to pay for your meal and add the tip to that total, your waiter does not immediately get that money. They might have to wait a week or more to get that money. The rule of thumb is usually 20% for decent service at a normal sit down restaurant. If you are at a buffet, about 10% is usually sufficient. If we feel that our server has been exceptional, we generally overtip.
Don't forget, if you regularly go some place the staff is going to recognize you and if you are a poor tipper or don't tip, that will be reflected in the quality of service you receive. Not to mention the quality of your food!!!

You friend's cheap. Tipping is part of our culture because many people in the service industry don't get paid much.

Its more of a cultural thing than anything else because in other countries like europe and asia, tipping isn't an obligation.

I understand why she doesn't necessarily love tipping because we tip AND paid inflated prices for things. But you know what? Its the price of being an American. She should get over it.

Oh my goodness!! I'm reading all these answers....wow! I have waited tables in the past and personally love it. I had regular customers that did not tip. It didn't make me love my job any less. Some can view it as being totally in the wrong or call her names, but truth is, it's her perogative. I not manage property and even though I put my heart into it and try to make every tenant's life a little better, very few stop to say thanks. Is that wrong? Socially unacceptable that they don't show gratitude? Well, I'd like for them too but it's their perogative. And it doesn't affect me loving my job.
