I went to a laundry lab in the Netherlands. Europe is far ahead of the US when it comes to residential clothes washers. Here is what they said: If you are washing cotton, the best way is to start off with cold water, then heat the water to warm, and wash. Then there must be 3 rinses.
So, you need to find a washer with it's own internal water heater, and then make sure the cycle has 3 rinses. Hope this helps you! Good luck!

Front loading washing machines work the best, plus they use 60% less water than a top loading washing machine.

I have used the basic Fridigidaire and the Sears models - they both work very very well.

Use detergent that says "HE" on the front of the box/bottle (not the regular kind of detergent) and use half of what the manufacturer recommends. Because these types of washing machines are so efficient, you do not need to use as much detergent as it says.

I have a Whirlpool Ultimate Care II and also a Whirlpool drier that are about a year old. The washer washes beautifully. I would buy another if I ever need it.
