If my usb port at home is defective, why can it detect my mp3?

Hi. Try installing the flash drive and use the 'Detect New Hardware' function in Control Panel. See if this finds it.

Newer flash drives only work on WinXP or newer, and not on Win98 or older.

If you're using XP, your USB device table may be all screwed up. Go into Device Manager and delete (uninstall) all of the devices listed in the USB section (right-click each one). Reboot, and Windows will rediscover all the devices, including your flash drive.
