I don't think monkeys make very good pets. I think the freak out when they hit puberty. On the other hand, check out these video clips of Squirrel and Howler monkeys - the monkeys look friendly, but kinda crazy.

It is probably more fun to watch monkeys than to own them!

No matter how much time and money you are willing to invest, this doesn't sound like the pet for you as a beginner. Monkeys are not easy to care for. There are no "calm" monkeys. They are all unpredictable once they hit adolescence. The cost is extremely high to have one, and vet costs are more! You have to feed a specialized diet, and they need a lot of time and attention.
Most of them live 20-40 years. You won't be able to go on vacation, move, or anything without first checking monkey laws. Many states don't allow you into the state, even to drive through, with a non-human primate. Most of them will bite someone at some time, and when that happens, your animal may be confiscated and put to sleep to test for rabies, regardless of whether they've had shots. It's like having a 2-year-old in diapers for 40 years...and they are smarter than you, and strong! Many can figure out combination locks. I really advise you to do some research before making this decision. We have 5 monkey rescues, because of the fact that people want a pet monkey, then can't handle them. It's not right.
Read the article at the following link when you get the time.

Please read the following books if you are seriously considering owning a monkey. Thanks!

Monkeys are not meant to be pets. It will be like having a baby for maybe 20 yrs. They have to be diapered, caged so when you are not home things are not destroyed, good or bad tempered. If you are serious about getting one, please talk to other monkey owners about the extensive care and costs (special food, vet and other needs) required to own one. Also remember to find out how long they live, you can not get a young one and after a while get tired of it get rid of it. They bond and breaking that bond causes them emotional turmoil. Volunteer at a zoo in order to work with them and learn their needs. Do your research.

There's no such thing as a calm monkey.
They will cling as babies, but as soon as they mature, they turn on their mommies.
They scream. It's instinctive communication, they can't be trained out of it.
They have very ugly sexual behaviors. Even neutered monkeys.
They bite. Again, instinctive communication, nothing you can do to stop it.
They play in their pee and poop. They fling it at you. They tear up diapers (just like babies, remember?)
You won't be able to find vet care. Very few are willing or able to treat monkeys even if the monkey would allow them to touch them, which most won't.
You won't be able to travel or find a "baby sitter". They carry disease that are dangerous. Quarantine laws are strict and difficult to deal with, and by the time it's a few months old, it will have bitten all of your friends (aka cheap pet sitters).
They carry dangerous diseases. You could die. Your friends, family, neighbors could die because of you.
They take the babies away from the mothers who miss them. The babies are traumatized too.
Look here for more reasons to just have a baby.
http://www.petmonkey.info/index.html This one is great. Read the whole thing, pay special attention to "Testimonials".
Give birth.
It's easier, cheaper, more humane, and less likely to cause death.
Volunteer at a Zoo.
You will learn the realities of caging wildlife. Especially monkeys who are as smart as children and strong.

there's no way you've gotten a monkey for a puppy! Monkeys are wild creatures besides the shown fact that tame they could look. one hundred's of folk interior the u . s . and uk have owned monkeys, and over 3/4 of those human beings have had to place down or sell their pets as they have became and attacked their proprietors. a number of the proprietors honestly died from the assaults. they are able to swap on human beings at any 2d and each so often for no given reason. PLease, it is not secure for you, or basic on the monkey. heavily, could you prefer to be caught in a cage and be referred to as cute daily for the the remainder of your existence?? i know i does no longer, so i will wager what the monkeys think of.

I heard or read or maybe it was on t.v. that it is no longer legal to own a monkey here in the USA. You may want to check it out first before you get all worked up and excited about getting yourself a monkey. I was just a kid when my dad was going to buy me a monkey and that was like 35 years ago when it was legal. ( I am not completely sure that it is illegal to own one, just telling you what I heard or read about it). Anyway, I was so excited that I was going to have myself a monkey. It was a "spider monkey" and it was really cool looking in a brochure. But, a salesman talked my dad out of it. He had the nerve to tell my dad that monkeys were very nasty and mean and this and that. So, I did not get my monkey. I was so very upset. It still bothers me 35 years later. Crazy huh? I hope that you are allowed to have a monkey and have many years of enjoyment out of him/her. (smile)

Monkies DO NOT make good pets!
They become aggressive as they mature.. its not something you can "train out of them".. they are also filthy animals.. all the jokes about flinging poo are true! Monkies can also carry horrible diseases that can be transmitted to humans, including hepatitis, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS.
