Looking at those specs... your friend should really upgrade his pc... you can find a better one than this for probably $300. But if he really just wants to upgrade the RAM then here's the info for him... http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Presario%207478 ...

The computer takes SDRAM (SyncDRAM, just a different name) and you are looking at DDR SDRAM, two totally different things, so no that will not work. You can only have a total of 512MB, so that means 256 per slot. Two of these will do the trick:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146079
By the way, you should tell your friend upfront not to expect anything spectacular from this upgrade, that is an old computer. You are basically putting a bandaid on a 6 inch cut thats gushing with blood.

no, will not work.
the ram you should be looking for is probably pc 100 considering the 97 Mhz bus and the ram specifys 100 mhz as the memory speed.
Crucial.com recommends pc133 using their memory finder(link below)

Its an old style ram chip
As such, your better off buying a new computer, rather than upgrading the ram.

System Memory • 64 MB 100 MHz SyncDRAM, shared memory architecture, two total DIMM slots upgradable to 512 MB - 8 MB dedicated for video memory (SyncDRAM DIMM required

Where it says two total DIMM slots upgradeable to 512mb, i belive that means it can have a TOTAL of 512mb, eg 2x256mb sticks.

I dont know if one 512MB stick will work.

Here's what you do, download CPU-Z a free system utility that will tell you the exact type of ram in his system, as well as the type motherboard.
