I agree with many of the things that the other posters have suggested. However, if you want to become "smarter" then you need to expand your mind by doing and learning new things. Explore areas and topics other than what you are already interested in. I didn't care about art or writing until I was in college. I am not an expert in those fields by any means but I learned about them and made them part of my personal repertoire. Learn something new everyday, learn a new word everyday, take a college or other class offered locally, refresh your mind on things you already know (like math)...these are just a few strategies. The key thing is to open your mind to new experiences. I learn tons of new information just by watching channels like Discovery, National Geographic, History Channel, and even news like CNN and Fox. I also suggest thoroughly reading the newspaper each day. You will be surprised at the number of things you can learn from simply being informed about the world.

Get new parents. No seriously try doing mentally intensive things such as playing chess or reading difficult novels (ie not Harry Potter or the Da Vinci Code). Also learn to focus your mind through meditation. I would read up on this on websites as I don't feel like going into it here, but in a nutshell: sit in a quiet place, close your eyes, breath through your nose and focus on your breath at the point right below the tip of your nose. Try to do this for 15 minutes to start and work your way up to an hour or more depending on your time. At first it is difficult to do without your mind drifting but if you keep it up it will greatly improve your concentration and focus which can help you utilize the intelligence you have to a greater extent. As an added immediate benefit, meditation makes you feel good. Really good.

Well some people disagree about what IQ is, whether it's born intelligence or raw mental power, but if you want to become smarter, you have to exercise your mind, because the brain is just like the abs or the biceps, you have to exercise it to make it stronger. Reading books, or any type of reading material helps, though novels I think do the best. Also you can do crosswords and stuff like Sudoku.

Being smart isn't only about memorizing.Like my history teacher says "Sure, that guy may know all the battles and wars but does he knows the cause and effects?".

develop brain strategies to help you remember and recall: chunking, clustering, mnemonics, hooks and chains. these will improve yr IQ by 10 pts at least. For example: memorise a list by making a mnemonic: eg french artists; beret, gaugiun, ignac, chaudat, adler, monet. How to memorise? look and you see the first letters spell big mac. imagine gauguin wearing a beret and a t shirt saying 'iggy' (for ignac). get the idea? My iQ is 150 but it only got that way by actively examining such strategies and using them daily!

Read more books and magazines that deal with complex and challenging subject matter. (Most romance novels and celebrity magazines don't fit into this)

Watch educational TV instead of just sports, porn and music videos.

Surround yourself with people that challenge you intellectually.

Eat more nutritious food so that you're body has the fuel it needs to optimize your learning ability.

Select hobbies that require you to use strategies and figure out things.
