Beyond the first answer, automated testing is particularly suited to testing multiuser programs and systems where one or more "user" machines each behave as if hundreds of users were accessing the system- asking for information, reacting to the response. I just read an article where an accounting package was tested as though 2500 users were accessing it for hours at a time.

instead of sitting at the computer clicking on buttons trying to crash the program, you have some driver application that clicks buttons trying to crash the program. What's great about this is you don't have to sit there doing this for hours and hours, and also the driver application logs what series of inputs cause a crash.
