I recently received an email saying that mars is going to be closer than it ever has before to the earth. Apparently this hasnt happen for a very long time. I havent noticed anything out of the ordinary lately so im starting to think it was a hoax.

Completely bogus. First, Mars will come to its closest approach to Earth in December for this year.
And then, this will only be 55 million miles.
On an exceptional year, with the Earth and Mars in the right position in their respective orbits, it can get down to 35 million miles. It can NEVER get any less than 34.6 million miles, which happened in 2003; and then it was the difference between a rare 34.6 and rather mundane 36 million miles closest approach; nothing to get all excited about.
The moon is only one quarter of a million miles. Mars is only double the diameter of the Moon. Do the math. Mars can never be anything but a bright star to the naked eye.

No. Mars can never be as big as the Moon to the eye EVER. This is a hoax email which has been circulating on the internet every summer since 2003; it wasn't true then, and it isn't true now. Despite what one answer said, Mars IS visible now, rising about 1 a.m. in the constellartion Taurus. It is a point of light, as large as it ever appears to the eye without a powerful telescope. It is currently 1/250 the size of the Moon, and can never get any bigger than 1/75 of the size of the Moon.

In order to appear the size of the moon, Mars would have to be at only 750,000 miles from Earth.
At its closest, Mars is 35 MILLION miles away. So lets say Mars decided right this moment to come within 750,000 miles of us within 2 days. That's 34,250,000 miles it has to travel in just 48 hours. Or 713,500 miles an hour.
Pretty fast for a planet.

But lets say Mars decided a year ago to come visit us this year. Don't you think the whole world would know? Not by email, but on the news, CNN, Oprah would have a special "Mars Visits" show, it would be in all the papers, they would interrupt American Idol for a "Special Report".
And everyone on Earth would have started seeing Mars getting larger in the sky for the past year.

This hoax started in 2003 when some uneducated **** decided to share his ignorance with everyone.
Thanks to him for so many of these questions on YA - 2 points each!

Not true..! The last time Mars made a close approach to Earth was 2003, and even then it wasn't even close to being as big as our moon.

I have also recieved a text about that but it was on July.It was already proven to be a hoax!
1)it is irrational that mars can go so near to earth when it has happened in 2003
2)What will happen on this days26,27,29,30??/(I forgot)>A total lunar eclipse in the Philippines!

Unless its orbit is changing gradually I'm sure you wouldn't notice anything different just yet, though the 26th is rather close so, yeah I agree, there would have been some noticeable change. I think it might be a hoax but might not, it really depends on who sent you the e-mail.

No, nor has it ever, nor will it ever. no longer interior the finished historic past of the image voltaic gadget has Mars regarded as enormous because of the fact the moon from Earth, because of the fact it truly is thousands and thousands of miles away in any respect circumstances.

Mars will never be as big as the moon to the naked eye. It's just too far away.

It may be as close as it ever will be to the earth, but it will still just be a dot in the sky.
