Well, journaling is a good way to do this. There are several good books on journaling and they can help. But just a day to day notebook of written down feelings will really tell you a lot. Also, ask people what they think of you. Pay attention to critisism and compliments. What are your strength areas? weaknesses? What about yourself would you most want to change? Honesty is a necessity and balance critsism with praise.
Find a hobby you like. Look up community classes or just commit to learning about and being involved with something new. Set some goals for yourself--even a simple one like making your bed everyday. There are also some good personality tests on the web. I am an INFJ. That says a lot about me and I took the test for free. Granted, internet testing may not be all gospel truth but it will give you some clues.

Do something for someone else not expecting anything in return. Treat others how you would like to be treated. Be kind, giving, caring, tolerant, patient, selfless, understanding, have unconditional love, be quick to forgive and slow to anger. You will like your self and so will others.

Nobody will tell you the way for you. You, yourself are to find it. Every body's way differs from that of others.

Ask yourself where is the last place you saw yourself. Retrace your steps to see if you can find yourself. Look in the couch cushions.

By asking yourself questions on what it actually is that you want out of life and what are your passions in life. So I ask you, what do you really want in life?, then set about obtaining them in a positive manner.
