First, a question. Is it a dead bolt? If no, a blockbuster card works best. if you dont have one a Fred meyer rewards card is just as good. credit cards are far too stiff and brittle. you need a flexible card that is laminated.
1 slide card between door slab and jamb right next to the knob. give it a wiggle untill it bends and touches the strike, push the card hard and pull the door knob towards you. continue to push and pull, in and out untill the door opens.

If it is a dead bolt, which isn't very likely if you locked yourself out. Then you are going to have to find a new way in. Windows are a good choice. any opperational window can be opened fairly easily. same card can be slid between the sash at the interlock and slide the lock open.
if you have a lock at the jamb like the old aluminum windows...a simple smack might be enough to open it. push the window closed all the way. push inward on the frame as to not break the glass. slide it open and when it engages the lock, hit the frame right where the lock is...pop your in.
If you have new vinyl or pvc windows...your in luck.
i use a suction cup on the glass to move the sash in a horizontal circular motion untill the lock moves around and you are in.a small up and down motion might help a little.

Good luck...power never beats brains and a soft touch.

A lock pic. But short of that, try using a thin credit card and see it you can get the latch to release. Usually, you can just break a window and unlock it and crawl through. Then you have to reglaze the window.

It might be a good idea to put an extra key somewhere in the garage. Then you can use your garage door opener to open the garage and get the key. If you can't get into your car without the keys, then try giving a neighbor an extra key, or have a hiding place where a key is hidden for such an emergency. good luck.

I am actually scared to answer this question. I could give you a different answer then the locksmith but then every yahoo on here would know and I can't say I trust even half of them. lol
The credit card won't work on most locks because they have a latch bolt (the piece of the lock that extends into the frame when the door is closed) with a security latch that prevents the latch bolt from being withdrawn when the security latch is extended.

A multi purpose paint scraper. Several different points and angles to work with. That's for the part that slides into the door frame.Picking a lock involves what would be considered burglars tools.

I was locked out of my apartment (another tenant locked the door to our hallway that I didn't have a key to), so I called the locksmith and they were able to get it open. What a pain. And kind of alarming if you think of it.
