I have an 8 port 10 M ethernet hub that shares files with my
machine on XP
IS it possible to also share a dial up connection or do I need a router for this ?

If it is possible. ..is it much more complicated than DSL or something...

You can do it with a hub. In fact if each machine has a spare ethernet port then you can do it with just a cable. You just need to enable Internet Connection Sharing on one machine:

1) Set up the internet connection on machine A.

2) Open up your network connections window, right click on the internet conenction and select"Properties" from the pop-up menu.

3) Clicked "Advanced Tab" and enable Internet Connection Sharing by clicking on the "Allow other network users to connect through this computers Internet connection" checkbox. This will put the machine on a local subnet and give it the IP address 192.168.0.1.

4) Set up machine B to connect to the internet through the subnet. Give it a different address on the same subnet (e.g. 192.168.0.2) and have it connect to the internet via machine A's local IP address, i.e. 192.168.0.1.

There are plenty of links on the net with more information about ICS, here's one on the Microsoft site:

Yes. It is possible. I have done this before.

The difference between a router and a hub is that a router is a computer itself that has dedicated connections to each port. A hub on the other hand will take the signal from one port and send it to all other ports, ethernet's original design. And it is not a hurdle in attempting to share a dial-up connection.

But, this is how my network was set up. I had 2 computers, both have a 56k modem. Only one of the 2 computers was set up with the Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) active. So when both computers need to access the internet, I would disconnect my connection, the non-ICS computer, and let my dad dial out on his computer. We did this because I could not tell the other computer to actually dial out from remote.

In Windows XP, research Internet Connection Sharing.

it is possible yes, but it would be a complete waste of time. even with a connection rate of 53.3 kbps which is the highest rate allowed by the FCC the actual data transfer rate would be close to half that depending on the file types being transfered

you can enable internet connection sharing on the PC with the dialup connection use DHCP on both systems, or if you use static set the gateway & dns to point to the host PC
