1/8th ply wood and glue, glue it on over the hole and then cut it out with a utility knife.

I agree with Gibson_slayer - if its painted, use some automobile bondo, itll take some time - a day or so, but it would be a lil cheeper then getting a new door. The other options - adhere a piece of 'Luan' wood to it - comes in 4x8 sheets - really thin wood, use a wood glue and some small nails in the corners to hold it while glue drys ( door would need to be taken off and set level) or the fastest way- a whole new door.

Hollow core doors are very inexpencive and readily available. My suggestion to you wuld be to purchase a new door. Home depot and lowes are fine.
If you plan to fix it...the product you use will cost half as much as the door.
first..is it wood or painted? If it is wood, forget it. If it is painted, you need some bondo automotive filler. Forget about using drywall mud. it will fall out very quickly.
second, if it is one of the doors with the fake pressed wood grain, forget it. this will only work on a smooth surface door...which is about 30 to 40 dollars, the bondo is about 20 dollars....see not worth it. use something to fill the hole like foam or bunched up paper. fill the hole with filler using a bondo spreader...5 to 10 dollars. let dry and sand for several hours...then prime and repaint....just buy the new door.

go to home store and ask for a door skin. it is a real thin sheet of plywood about 3 foot by 7 or so. use contact cement on both sides to glue it to the door. stain , paint or varnish.

ps use a plane to trim to size after gluing to door.

Interior hollow core doors are relatively inexpensive. It might be better to replace it because any patch is going to look like a patch.

I wasn't the first to suggest it , but just replace the door. It'll look nicer and it isn't that big a job to do. Then you can either paint it our stain it to your choice. good luck.

Hang a mirror over it. You can use the mirror and cover the hole.
