I just received a new modem and am interested in installing it. I have an existing modem connected to my router and am concerned that if I replace the existing modem it may mess up my router configuration. Does installing a new modem have any bearing on the router?

nope...all you need to do is replace the old modem with the new one and restart your network

If the new modem supports the same protocol as the old one, there shouldn't be a problem. There are basically 2 protocols that routers use; DHCP, and PPPoE. So if the old one was DHCP, make sure the new one also is, and there won't be a problem with the router.

There still may be a problem with your internet provider, however. With cable and sometimes DSL, you can't just switch modems any time you feel like it, you have to call the cable company and tell them you're switching, and give them the ID number of the new modem (called the "MAC Address"), and they update their system to recognize the new modem.

I believe you're referring to an ethernet card. If that is the case. Than, no. it wont have any baring on your existing settings/configuration. I have 2 of them installed in my desktop myself.

If you are referring to an actual modem.. there might be an IRQ conflict. In some cases. IRQ conflicts are relatively easy to deal with. However, best bet would be to disable one of the modems.
