So today I kept smelling this odd odor on me and finally i realized it was my breast pad. So i smelled it and it had a foul odor both of them. I smelled a pad that hadnt been used and no odor so the conclusion is its my milk that smells bad. Is it possible that something is wrong with my milk? My daughter has been more gassy then ever tonite and thats the only thing i can think of. I dont know if i should not breastfeed her and give her formula?? Im lost but shes very cranky and what seems to be gassy......

I would continue breastfeeding.
Did you eat something that could be causing your baby to have gas?
The odour is probably just bacteria that formed on your breastpad when it was exposed to air. I would be pretty confident that your fresh milk is fine.

It could be that you just had the breast pad on too long. My baby girl was pretty gassy for the first little while. I would say to just give her some mylacon and maybe watch your diet. Sometimes things like chocolate, tomatoes or tomato sauce, orange juice can upset their little tummies. I had to give up chocolate for a while, but the gas went away. I would keep with the breast milk. It contains a natural laxative that is easy on your baby's tummy. Formula only made mine a bit worse. Hope this helps!

Change your breastpad more often. We leak and don't realize it- that is why you smell it. Likewise, milk will sour- even breastmilk.

It could be something you ate which accentuated the odor- but it's likely it's just you are needing to change the pad more often. If you have no pain in your breasts, lumps, etc. you can rule out the infection.

Good luck!

The milk in your breast-pad has soured due to contact with the natural bacteria present on your skin. It only takes 10 minutes for milk to become completely soured under such conditions. Clean your nipples with warm water and soap before feeding, and use fresh pads if you have seepage. I used to use old cloth diapers or receive blankets that I cut into small squares and kept them freshly-laundered all the time. I never had any problems like you describe. I also breast-fed my babies until they were at least 7 months old. By that time, they usually had enough immunities developed so that an occasional "slip" did not affect them much at all.

Good luck!

Yeah, it probably is because you had the breast pad on for too long. That happens to me. Usually when I wake up and its been soaked over night. But, when I take it off and replace it, it's fine again.
Jackson was so grumpy yesterday and was fussing for no reason, but today he was happy as can be. I think he was gassy yesterday too. Try Mylicon drops for her and laying her on her back and pushing her knees/legs into her stomach. That always makes Jackson fart or poop when I do that, lol sorry! It's funny, but I know it makes him feel better.

You first have to remember that breast milk is after all milk and can sour. You could try changeing your breast pad more often. If that dosn't seem to help you need to go to your dr. You might have a breast infection (red tender swollen breast). This donse' t meen stop breastfeeding your baby, it will only make the infection worse.
But as I said before, it may just be sour milk in the breast pads

My son was lactose intolerant- whenever I had dairy, he would get incredibly gassy and cranky, you should try cutting out dairy for a bit to see if thats the problem. Don't stop breastfeeding, that won't help. How long were the pads wet? You should change them as soon as they get wet.

Breast milk is always best. But once my newborn wouldn't sleep all night, and when I gave him formula, he konked out finally. About the smell...my breast milk leaves a milky/sour smell on the breast pad, and I assume that that is normal. I have never experienced any other odd smells, but my guess is that it is probably something you ate that wasn't compatible.

Did You eat anything that you shouldn't have ate?
Thats the first thing to think about. If so then thats the problem with the smell and with her being so gassy. When breastfeeding you have to watch what you eat becasue it can affect the baby also.

Hope this helps and I hope she feels better soon.

*grins* Did you happen to eat:

green leafy vegetables
knockwurst, bratwurst, or a garlic sausage
spaghetti
broccoli
beans
any strongly spiced food?

If you did, you're experiencing what I cheerfully call "the stinky buffet." A lot of highly spiced or bulky foods leave a very strong smell behind them in your milk. It's totally okay and chances are your daughter's even enjoying it - mine used to go gaga over wasabi in my milk.

If, however, you have a fever, breast pain or tenderness, and that bad odor, you need to go directly to the ER.
