my widescreen monitor stretches all my pictures-what can i do?

i have a dell inspiron 530 with vista and a samsung 20 inch monitor. all of my pictures are stretched out because the monitor is widescreen. is there any settings i can try to fix this? i cant find anything that i need-i was thinking maybe change a setting so its not widescreen anymore but has two black panels on the sides and is more square so the pictures arent stretched anymore.

You can set the desktop to the right resolution. If your video card won't let you pick the resolution the monitor is advertised at, reduce the color depth.
