I have an extra white wire coming from the wall (black, red, white, & copper wires) , but my replacement drop in stove top only has red, black and copper.

What do I do with the extra white wire from the wall?

Your stove top does not require a neutral (white wire), so none was provided. Don't connect the white in the wall to anything. Cap it off. Some stoves need a neutral for a clock or timer so one is included in the wall receptacle or outlet.

Attach the 'extra' white wire to the metal casing on the stove top. There may be a screw,(machine), or lug on the bottom of the metal casing. 240 volts is two 120 volt lines, with a Neutral. The Neutral is for the 240 volt setup, and isn't a good a ground as one thinks, hence the addition of the fourth wire. (whom am I to argue with the National Electrical Code!)

EDIT:

Just had a discussion with John himself. He told me that you don't need a neutral with your stove. So like he says, just put a wire nut on it and tape it up.

Most of the ones I've messed with have had the 4 wire plug. Give ol John the best answer.

Thanks for the info John.

good luck.

I am guessing that your cook top is fastened in place. In this case the white wire is not needed and can be capped at the wall.

the white wire is a ground wire which terminates to a ground lug in the box. the black and red carry the current needed for the 220 volt
