we get to keep our faces locked in horror while the oilman rips us off.

I suppose that's a benefit, if we're allowed to keep our feelings.

It's a deep question, on many levels. In a way yes it's worth it if Iraq one day is an true democratic country and we can levrage each other in international relations. That may happen when our kids run the country. At the other level, this war happened for tomany wrong reasons. When a president comes out and tells you Saddam wanted to kill my daddy so i have to put out an revange thats complete bs. The second part of your question its worth it and not worth it. Every war is about religion and money. Most wars generate economical booms either during or after: rebuilding, goods, etc...
No goos from a stand point of emotional distress, USA facing international distress as far as policy, time to heal. At the end regular citizens like oyu and me take it on the chin.

By us being there and in Afghanistan we're helping keep the Moslem world fragmented. The worst thing that can happen would be for us to pull out. Al Qaida is looking to put the entire Moslem world under one government and pulling out would leave a power vacuum that they would fill giving them a foothold in the area. We'd be back and it would be worse.
It's not about the price of oil but about the future security of the western world. We have to prop up some lousy regimes to get the job done but it's better than the alternative.
We've made mistakes. We should learn from them and do things right not cut and run.

"I know patriotism exists, I know it has done much in the present contest. But a great and lasting war can never be supported on this principle alone. It must be aided by a prospect of interest, or some reward."
George Washington

I don't believe that it's in our best interest to have our troops in the middle of the Islamic reformation. I don't see any rewards.

I never bought the 'oil' argument. A free market for the oil in Iraq, is good for the US. We need oil to run industry - it's not the best situation to have the world's oil controlled by dictatorships that hate us.

War makes money! Look at all of the people that this war has put to work. Not just our military, also all of the people who make the equipment and supplies needed to keep the war going. Note: This isn't a war about oil. If you have served over there you would know this.

I don't know - I suspect no one really knows.
I do know that our previous policies of inaction and no effective response to the terrorists' attacks finally culminated in the events of 9/11 - and we must not revert back to these policies. The terrorists cannot be allowed to slaughter innocent men, women and children with impunity.

yes it is worth it. we benefit from the knowledge that our country is far more superior than any other country. everyone thinks that is mainly about oil. well, who really cares, at least we got rid of Saddam and now we will get rid of all these other idiots who think they can come into MY country and blow things up. don't worry, bin laden will get his due.
