no to brad lidge too, he's on the decline... I wish they held those kids until the off season so they could figure out what's gonna happen with the corners... Lowell is FA... they need a five hitter as of now... so you'd have those prospects to deal... for a lefthanded powerhitting cornerman if needed.. ahdhem Helton.. adhem.. sorry something in my throat... that's my 2 cents.
Gagne sucks, he hasn't pitched in 2 years... the only good thing about him is he's a type a FA so the sox get a draft pick when he signs with another team... but they gave up 2 guys that are ready... and 1 that's pretty good... bad deal... they needed a bat... and they got it in Kielty... there was no need for a trade right then... I figure he's a scrub pitcher now.. he eats up innings so manny del and oki and timlin get rest.
good for Murphy tho.. the sox would have liked to keep him but they are really deep at outfield right now... manny, coca, drew, keilty, hinske, ellsbury, moss.. that's too many.. he was held back in the red sox organization.
go pats!

Here's my view of this deal:
Gagne will get better. It may not seem like it, but trust me, he will. Today against the White Sox, he got a feel for his changeup, and he was a completely different pitcher. If he can mix in his offspeed stuff effectively, he's among the top setup men in baseball.
Now, the only issue I have with this deal is that it is, in essence, a three-month rental. I would rather the Sox try to extend Gagne now for two reasons. One, it might give him more confidence, and help him pitch better. Two, having Gagne and Okajima setting-up Papelbon for the long haul just sounds SWEET.
We gave up:
1. Gabbard -- a middle-of-the-rotation lefty. Our rotation for next year looks like: Beckett-DiceK-Wakefield-Lester-Buchholz. No room for Gabbard, and he needs to start if he's going to do it effectively in the future.
2. Murphy -- possibly a passable corner-outfielder, but with a power-lacking bat. He isn't going to hit .481; it's just not going to happen. He's more likely to be a decent bat off the bench, but he wasn't going to play much in Boston anyway.
3. Engel Beltre -- a five-tool talent, but one who is 4-5 years away from making an impact. Plus, our other signings from last year are considered far better, particularly Moises Tejeda.
This is not a bad deal for the Sox at all, and I think Gagne will help us immensely in the playoffs. I just hope the Sox extend him before it's too late.

Honestly, the only reason why I was happy with this trade, was because Gabbard was going to be a starting pitcher for sure for the Rangers, instead of maybe having be sentdown, with Lester coming back from cancer and Schilling from the DL. I really didn't think they needed Gagne, but if they didn't get him, the Yankees would've, so I think that was their main priority to get him.
However, if Gagne ever gets going, you (and me, and every other Red Sox fan) won't regret this trade
But I am happy for Gabbard, because he has a for sure spot in that Rangers rotation

I don't know, man...Personally, I think we maybe should have kept Gabbard...I would have...Schilling has probably realistically got a couple good years left...and when Gabbard did start(in fact, I think it was when Schilling was rehabbing in Pawtucket), he did fairly well...So, I think he could have gotten into the rotation eventually...We will need someone for the rotation when Schilling retires...Lester does look good coming back from cancer, but personally, I'm a little iffy on Wakefield...I think he could be a top reliever...when he's good, he's good...but when he's bad, he's bad...getting knocked around in 3 or 4 innings...
As far as Gagne, so far he has sort of been a disappointment, but may be coming around a little seeing his last couple times out...Of course, its Dave, Manny and the rest of the offense that gives the pitching a big lead most of the time...

ummm yea i kinda regret the deal for one reason.because the redsox gave up kason gabbard who is a young player and was really pitching well and winning games for us.gagne has not lived up to the hype and has been dissapointing so far.but hey who knows he might get back to his old dominating self again.he probably just needs time to get adjusted to the whole"playing in boston pressure thing"and yea right now the deal for murphy and gabbard for lidge looks a whole lot better than for gangne but,it didnt happen and who knows how lidge would be playing for boston.
