They must have a huge cluster of servers and hard drives. Is it possible that the servers are located in different parts of the globe, yet networked together?

I was in a warehouse of major college, doing service work (on a Liebert Unit, cooling system for DATA rooms) and noticed tons of racks on storage shelves, each rack must have had a hundred hard drives installed. They looked like they'd slide in (like trays) into a large housing somewhere.

All of those hard drives collecting dust, doing nothing, and becoming obselete each day.....

Regarding Yahoo servers, this is from paragraph 7 in the Yahoo's ToS which you can get to from the bottom of the page.

"When you register with Yahoo!, you acknowledge that in using Yahoo! services to send electronic communications (including but not limited to email, search queries, sending messages to Yahoo! Chat or Yahoo! Groups, uploading photos and files to Yahoo! Photos or Briefcase, and other Internet activities), you will be causing communications to be sent through Yahoo!'s computer networks, portions of which are located in California, Texas, Virginia, and other locations in the United States and portions of which are located abroad. If they were in server racks, chances are they were or in the process of being stored before installation at another location. This is done more frequently because of ordering the servers, and racks.
And, yes they could be in and probably are in different locations and tied together.

Pretty sure the main HQ is located somewhere in the Bay Area of Cali.

That's where all the high-tech. computer/internet companies are (like Google, Facebook, Oracle, Cisco; to name a few).
