You don't have to starve to be an actor. You just have to be a bit more innovative than most. You need a good paying flexible job. My advice, get a degree in something unrelated and make yourself very employable. It costs to have an acting career. Classes and pictures are expensive. In fact I'd say it's essential to make an adult living while trying to get acting work. That way you can do it for the rest of your life even if you never make your living acting.

I agree with Tina on the local theater group, you probably get a hook up from your drama teacher.
Be prepared though to be that starving actor that you fear so much. You can't accomplish something worthwhile without suffering a little pain. In his book Dirty Jokes and Beer, Drew Carey, said during the Clinton administration he was ready to eat a bullet. Take heart though as an actor the pain you suffer will go a long way in your acting career, it will bring more depth to your Characters.

Nothing worse than the blind leading the blind. I am sorry to tell you this, but if you are not interested in a life of hard work and lack of luxury, acting is not for you. Having something to fall back on will just cause you to do that, so if you just think you want to be an actor and you don't have to be an actor, don't bother. It will never work. Broadway. Or even a local theater program leader or something like that could get you headed the right way after school.
