I recently bought 168 used tennis balls. I am a teacher and I am going to put them on the bottom of my chairs and tables. Here is the problem. I am supposed to cut an "X" in the ball and I have tried everything. Nothing seems to work - any ideas?

Being a custodian we just make one slit in the ball. Not long. And cutting it deep enough in to the hollow of the ball. And fit it over the leg of the chair or desk. Seems to work ok.

How To Cut A Tennis Ball

Use the Tennis Ball Cutter™ to easily and safely cut tennis balls for classroom chairs and desks. The cut is consistent and sized to keep the tennis ball on. On the desk and chair legs. Cut 6 to 10 tennis balls a minute. www.tennisballcutter.com

I did this with a box cutter and put under all 6 chairs. The way
to do this, is to first see how big the X needs to be to fit the
chair's leg. If the chair leg is about a 1inch square, then you
need to cut about 3/4th X on the ball. If the chair leg is round,
make the X half its size. Now when you put the ball on the leg,
it needs to be a very tight fit.
In my case, I used all new balls and it worked fine.

my dad has done that to put tennis balls on the bottom of my grandma's walker. also, he has the same project on his hands to put the tennis balls on the bottom of his desks at school (he's a teacher as well).

make sure you wear work gloves to protect your hands. he used an exacto knife to cut into the tennis balls. i have helped him before to accomplish this task. once i have made my incision with the exacto knife i use a tough scissors to cut the rest of the X.

I would use a fairly small drill bit (1/4") and a cordless drill. That way you can make a quick incision with so many balls. Then after you have a starter hole you can cut them with a knife much easier. Starting with the razor knife is kinda risky I think.

I would use a utility knife, and cut on the line, only cut enough for the chair tip to go through or they will come off all of the time when your kids push their chairs back... But a sharp utility knife with a razor blade in it should do the trick..

Wow I never thought of that! My puppy just love tennis balls. I didn't have to teach her she just took to them very well. However once you get him used to them get the industrial ones from pet smart. They are harder to destroy and last a lot longer than regular ones. I think they also make scented ones!
