My husband is severely attached to a cat we got awhile back. I really didn't think too much of it when he wanted it, i felt kind of bad for it myself so I told him as long as he could keep up with it, it would be fine. Well its not neutered, and it keeps "marking its territory" by urinating on our things. We can't afford to neuter it and its too late now that he's done it so much, he won't be able to break his habit, so i told him our only option is to give it up. He had a fit and called me cold hearted for suggesting it. But honestly, I would really rather have that cat gone then have to go everywhere smelling like cat piss, I'm a server and i have been getting some dirty looks for it lately and lower tips. When i come home, the stench is so bad (he does it everyday) that it hurts my stomach. I even threw him outside one day, and he's been an inside cat since he was born. And my husband said if i did it again he would kick me out. I really don't know what to do here??

It's not that i don't like cats, i love them, but not like i do humans. Yeah it would be hard to get rid of him but the problem lies more with my husband always putting the damn thing before me.

Maybe take the cat to an animal shelter....explain to the staff what is happening....maybe the vet will desex the cat for free because they put down so many cats that are unwanted every year because of male cats who have not been de sexed. They would also understand that male cats especially who are not desexed will go roaming and impregnate any cat. I am sure they would prefer to desex the cat than to put down the kittens that are unwanted. Failing that, maybe leave the cat at the animal shelter and maybe if they think it is saleable, they will de sex it then sell it to someone who wants it. I live in Australia and I know they wont sell any male cats without having them desexed first. Maybe even suggest to your husband all the costs this cat will eventually incur....there is worming on a regular basis....vitamins....feeding it......so if he can afford to provide these things for the cat, then he can afford to have him desexed. Your husband is being a real arrse and maybe if the stench is so bad in your house you would be doing yourself a favour by leaving.....I know I could not live in a house that stinks of cat piss....its horrible.

You have to understand that this cat is an animal and it deserves just as much love as anything or anyone else. I have a cat that does the same thing but sense I love the cat and would never give him up, I deal with it. I also keep all the doors shut to my rooms where I dont want him to go and spray and so my personal and loving things are not harmed. I spray myslef with perfum and it really helps. I know that it is a pain in the butt but there are simple ways to get around it without harming the cat or your husband. Try putting litter boxes where ever he sprays just to see how that works. Also you can do what I do by shutting all the doors to all the rooms so he has only a small amount of places he can go. Try bleach to kill the smell and just wash everything and then maby that will get the smell away and if you keep the doors shut then it will stay that way. I hope that you do end up getting the cat fixed because it is really important for your health and the cats health.

Your husband should be made to understand how the territory marking works. Tell him that male cats need neutering to curb that behavior. Does your husband care if he lives in a smelly house?
The other option is to inform your husband that you will take the cat to the vet for neutering. If he even objects to that, the issue is not the cat, but a deeper hostility or problem. No man should threaten a woman over any such a thing, or anything. I do love cats, too, but people should keep their homes clean. I use Air Wick plug-ins to combat an upstairs neighbor's excessive smoking, but this is a more peaceful way than to lock horns with a stranger over behavior that he can't easily change.
The cat may be marking intensely for a reason, like changes in the house, or it senses your disagreeable feeling about the situation. If you can befriend the cat sincerely, you'll find they are wonderful animals-- very therapeutic, too. Only if you are sincere, however. Cats know who is sincere, My ex-husband did not like my cat out of jealousy for the care she got, and she knew it and did not get near him.

It's very difficult to give up an animal that you care for even if it is behaving badly. I had to do it and it was very difficult. If you can't afford to have it neutered, you really can't afford to keep the cat. Neutering isn't that expensive. Cat litter and food on an ongoing basis is very expensive. Talk to him about saving up for neutering, or any other options he can think of to curb the problem. Tell him that if he insists on keeping the cat, then he has to solve the problem with the smell and continued marking. The neutering is going to be a lot cheaper than replacing carpeting, drapes, upholstery and clothing.

Get the cat neutered anyway, my vet is cheap but he is only 45 bucks where I live, it will help, maybe not completely stop. If that does not stop it enough you can handle cleaning a spot or so every once in a while, that cat would be history.......... as in "opps sorry it must have got out when I opened the door". Pet stores have urine stuff, don't even bother buying a cheap kind. Get a good urine remover, a gallon will cost you upwards of 30 bucks, but it will work on carpet, couches, etc if you use it as directed. Leather anything, have to throw it away, never found anything to get the smell out of leather.

Get the cat neutered and give him proper kitty litter trays. Change the litter and keep it clean everyday. You need to be more supportive in your husband's love for this cat. IT's just a cat, not a woman.
