"tough lover" = "one who gives tough love"
I didn't think that was too much of a stretch.

Tough love doesn't have anything to do with a lover. It is letting a person take the consequences of their actions. Of course, you love them and try to help them but when that does not work then tough love might do it for them.

You don't give an example of whys and where fors.
Or your coception of 'Tough Love" It does not mean abaseing or phyical abuse by any means.
Tough love, (Not tough lover) is used for reality that a person is moving in the wrong direction to self destruction, and because you care you can no longer enable them to do so, So you let go of them with love to be responsible for their own errors. You do not get or expect to get diffent results by
doing the same thing over and over. Usually an enabler is
backed up to a wall and wore out, and relizes they can not fix anybody, So they let go with love.
