Where? Crete - Hieroglyphs on walls in Egypt, exactly where Plato said he learned of Atlantis identified a culture fitting his description precisely as the Cretians. Their Civilization was wiped out by the eruption of Santorini. Today we Identify them as the Minoans.

Yes, there were probably some survivors of their culture. and they probably had offspring.

They probably looked like Greeks.

They most likely spoke Greek or a dialect of it. Though they could have had a distinct language of their own. It is impossible to know for sure.

Some of the details don't match. But this could just be Plato retelling the details wrong and taking some poetic liscence with the story. Instead of 9000 years it was 900 years earlier. and it was not as big as Egypt and Asia Minor, it was between Egypt and Asia Minor. He may have just added the beyond the pillars of Hercules part because it was the only place he could imagine an island that big being. Remember as well that with each retelling of a story details are lost. In the 900 years before Plato heard the story it could have gotten quite corrupted. We are lucky he wrote it down when he did. And people have still managed to twist it around.

1) There were some odd answers. Although what Plato wrote of Atlantis is more than we have from any of his contemporaries, he is *not* the only one to mention it. Plato simply provides some actual information, rather than simply referring to it. According to him, it lay beyond the "Pillars of Hercules". This means that it could be *anywhere* outside of the Mediterranean.

Many believe that Plato learned details of Atlantis from some Egyptian manuscript. If he did, we no longer have any copy of that source.

2) There is no way of knowing what language they may have spoken.

3) It is certainly possible that some Atlanteans escaped the deluge, were absent when the deluge struck, or had descendants living in other locations, especially considering Plato's claim that parts of Africa and Europe were at one time under their control.

4) There is no indication that Atlanteans were anything other than human. Their physical characteristics are wholly unknown.

5) It is not possible to tell if "Atlantean" could have been a forebear of any modern language, as we have no known examples of it. Considering its reported time, it would predate the history of most known languages.

Note that many scholars believe that Plato just made it up, or that his facts were wrong. However, they are basing this theory on their own lack of knowledge. The *truth* is, it could very well have been based on historical record that has long since been destroyed. Possibilities: a civilization centered in western Africa, western Europe or the Americas. If trade existed between America and the Mediterranean in ancient times, it would explain the discovery of traces of cocaine in many Egyptian mummies. I do not believe that this is likely, but it is *certainly* possible. Likewise, an ancient (stone age) coastal sea-faring nation might be likely to leave little, if any, archaeological evidence in territory under their control, particularly if their rule consisted only of receiving slave tribute. It seems to me *very* likely that Plato was writing about a place that actually existed. Its location was, perhaps, not certain due to myths rising up around it over the *thousands* of years http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantis , but there is no *good* reason to believe that it was not an actual civilization.

Another point: if scientists are correct about the extent of glaciers during the last ice age (about 10,000 years ago), and if they are also correct about how the melting of the much smaller remaining polar glaciers will flood coastal areas and islands, then it is no reach to believe that Atlantis was (mostly) submerged during the warming that occurred at the end of the last ice age.

Well first, how is it that plato was a philosipher who probably never travelled and is the only one to recall atlantis. Also, if people knew where atlantis was i think they would be trying to get to it.

Umm if atlantis was real, probably an unknown dialect since on one else has been there to teach them greek, latin, etc.

Probably not. According to plato, all atlanteans died when it went under.

The Earth story comes from Solon. An Egyptian scholar or priest. Who told it to Plato, and he wrote it down. Atlantis was just a small place at the time Solon's information was learned. An island city surrounded by perimeters of water. It fell into the sea in one night after an Earth cataclsym of some sort. Ruth Montgomerey's book, "The World Before". Supposedly written through automatic writing. Says Atlantis was a Great Empire. That at some point wanted to rule the world. Which brought about thier downfall. I have read so much channeling. Alleged telepathic communication from higher intelligences. That I cannot tell you where I learned what. And I have been given insight by the Holy Spirit regarding Bible references to the Atlanteans. An alien race brought a Giant Crystal to Atlantis. It harnessed the Earth forces. Magnetism, radio waves, and such. Which gave them flying machines. That is what the ancient airport on the Nazca Plains of Peru is. They used the crystal for war and it backfired, blowing the major part of Atlantis up! Read Ezekiel 1:22, "The Terrible Crystal." KJV. The Crystal is under the bottomsoil in the Bermuda Triangle, where a vortex, spiral of energy exists. Edgar Cayce said Atlantis would rise in a certain year near Bimini. And they discovered underwater stonework like a road in that year, at that spot. The Atlanteans mingled internationally and extraterrestrially. But the Red race was the dominant race. The Chittim mentioned in the Bible, and who lived in historical Northern Africa, are the descendants of the Atlanteans. Just as the Basques in Spain today. The United States, land of the Red peoples today. Is the Chittim mentioned in the book of Daniel, that will attack the Middle East in our Time. Look up chittimwood in the dictionary. It's a type of American wood!

I prefer the science fiction show Stargate Atlantis as a possible hint of an extraterrestrial ship large enough and sitting on top of the waters edge to give the impression it was an island just because of it's massive size. There may have even been more than one of these floating cities in our oceans studying us and collecting genetic materials.

Maybe Atlantis is simply a metaphor made from the hopes of the philosopher who was hoping that one day the world woud be less ignorant and hateful? if this is true than we are definately no where near this goal. this is sad I know. but maybe one day people will open their eyes and realize that hating others does no good but harm themselves. Love and Peace is the only way for us as humans to survive. OH and it would help if we were a little bit nicer to our earth. pretty soon we will have to move to another planet just so we can destroy that one like we have this one. ok im done soapboxing now. =)
