Try downloading another disk clean up program. I strongly recommend "ccleaner." You may download it at www.downloads.com and be assured that its completely safe. Its much faster than the disk clean up microsoft windows provide.

Go to the link below and scroll down to 48 and you'll see the "Disk Cleanup - Compress Old Files Freezes" Fix in the right column, download it and run it which should correct your problem.
Just click on the words "Disk Cleanup-Compress Old Files Freezes" not the underscored word "Undo".
"To use the Regedits: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.

sounds like its time to go thru the long process of reloading to factory level,do 3 to 7 times,it will clean up all the stuff,if you have the recovery disc format the hard drive 3 o 5 times, like i said it is a lond process to do it right, but you will have a clean system to start over with

Do not use disk cleanup is not as nice as ccleaner. Ccleaner is superior to remove junk files and unneded data.
Get ccleaner here: http:/www.ccleaner.com and it's freeware.

restart your computer, if that doesn't fix it scan for viruses. If this is a new problem use "system restore" to go back to a previous day when your computer worked correctly.
