'Conviction' is when you 'really seriously believe in' something. Yes, it's the same word that is used when someone is tried for a 'crime' ... but it's 'different' ... you would be told 'You have been convicted' and not 'you have conviction' ...

Usually, a pretty good compliment.
When someone is "convicted", they're "convicted" by their peers (a jury), who are sure of their decision.
If you have "conviction", you speak with authority, like you know you're right. Usually related to high self esteem.

a conviction doesn't only mean a legal circumstance...this is also the meaning....3. The act of convincing of error, or of compelling the admission of a truth; confutation...it also means strongly held belief....I don't know what you were talking about before he said this, but i wouldn't take it in a bad way.
