She was absolutely cruel. She was very abusive and she did beat and mistreat her children. You should watch Mommie Dearest shows you all about her crazy ways! Have you not ever heard of faking it. I know I hear of lots of people being miserable and they seem like the happiest most content person around.

Honey, photographs are staged and even if you appear happy in them, sometimes you're not. Life is hard. You have to remember that Joan was a tough woman. She had to be tough in a business that was dominated by men. I'm sure she was a little tough on her children but back then people actually spanked their kids (instead of letting them get away with bad behavior like we see run rampant today). We'll never know what happened behind closed doors. Some people who've met Christina said she wasn't very pleasant and she really seemed to milk this "child abuse" for all that was worth. She profited off of it greatly. She failed as an actress and she'll never hold a candle to her mother's legendary career but they say Joan had a bad childhood as well. You have to take into consideration that Christina and Christopher got nothing in their mother's will. I find that a bit strange. I'm not saying Christina is lying or that Joan is a saint, I'm sure some of these things have happened but extremely exaggerated. Like when she was forced to sit there until she ate her dinner. Who hasn't been there? I think we all have. People also have discredited the "garden" part, but who knows.

from what i've read, mommie dearest isn't exactly the way things were and all those photos were staged by the studios. crawford was a master at her craft. even if she were having an attack of appendicitis, she'd look good. while i do believe she had a bit of ocd or something similar and she was incredibly anal about her profession, i don't think she was nearly as abusive as the book and movie would have us believe. some of that is just sensationalism.

Uhm, the book and movie mommy dearest, written by her adoptive daughter claimed they were, but there is much speculation about it and that the daughter was very jealous of her mother and that she didn't get everything she wanted, so the daughter was very vindictive.
