I am trying to learn unix, but im having trouble getting on... im using Putty, and i need a host address, but i don't know one or what im supposed to put there.... i need help.

You have to have an account on the system that you put in. Check with your ISP (whoever connects you to the internet) and ask if they have a "shell machine". Its probably linux instead of unix but thats pretty close.

There are servers out there which will make you an account to login to but they are not publicly advertised usually.

A host address refers in this case to the fully qualified domain name or IP address of the machine you are trying to connect to. It must be running the sshd demon and accept ssh connections through the part of the firewall you are accessing it from..
