If you use the Internet, it is highly recommended you install an antivirus, anti spyware and firewall on your computer. Windows Defender is an anti spyware program. You didn't specify if you are using Norton's Internet Security Suite or Norton's Antivirus. If you are using the internet security suite, it includes an antivirus, anti spyware and firewall. So, you don't need Windows Defender. If, however, you are using Norton's Antivirus then you will need Windows Defender.

Unfortunately, you have discover that security software take alot of computer resources. They provide real time protection, so the programs are always working in the background. You can switch to alternative security software which uses less resources. Someone mentioned AVG antivirus which is a good pick. You can also try Antivir and Avast. As for anti spyware, you can try Spybot and/or Ad Aware. You can find these programs at www.filehippo.com

Norton is an anti Virus checker. Windows Defender is an Anti Spy Ware checker.

N is the one slowing down your PC.
When the sub runs out don't pay them anymore money. Uninstall it and get a FREE anti Virus Program like AVG or Avast. They don't hog so much RAM like N. and are just as good.
