Currently I have a system consisting of an Athlon 64 3000+ processor, with 1gb RAM and a Radeon 9600 series graphics card.
For a budget of around £1000, what processor, motherboard, ram and gfx card combo would you recommend upgrading to, that would make gaming much more fun to play, without having to lower all the graphical settings, resolution, and use scripts to remove certain things in order to ensure the smooth running of it?

I just recently got a 19" LCD monitor for my birthday and have got a decent Logitech headset, Razer Copperhead mouse. I'm also the main pc user so buying a new system wouldn't be of much use. If I decide to buy a new system, the internet connection wouldn't be sufficient to use the old one as a server anyway.
Buying only the required hardware for an upgrade would mean that I'd save money on the dvd-rw drives and the outer case etc.
From reviews that I've read, Intel do seem to have come ahead of AMD in terms of processors, and I was considering a 8800 ultra, but still need to look around I think.
