I have a 6month old ball python which I purchased 4 weeks ago. The guy in the pet shop said to feed him every 4-5 days on fussies which I'm doing, and the snake is eating well.

I have read various python books and care sheets which tell you different things on feed .. ie.. one book quotes, feed every 7/10 days, another book states twice a week and the latest advice I was given from a breeder was to feed say every saturday 1 fussie and when that had gone feed the snake another straight away !!!

What is your advise on feeding

PLZ...

a 6 month old ball (python regus), should be at least on small mice if not medium mice, feed your snake a mouse about the size of the fattest part of his body, once a week. dont worry if his head neck look to small to take it, as long as the mouse will fit in the largest part of his body he will take it no problems. the problems with royals is that they glutton feed, if you offer a mouse every 4 or 5 days he will take it, but because he is getting so much, he will eventually stop feeding for a month or two, maybe a little longer before starting to feed again. with royals the best way to feed them is one mouse, every 7 - 10 days, when you think the snake might be ready to upgrade in size of the mouse, then maybe give him say 2 small mice in one feed, (at once) then the next time move him up to the medium, etc. but if you dont want your roayl to go off food for a set period of time, it is best regular feeding them every 7 to 10 days.

I have a ball python that I feed once a week. When they are juveniles it is best to feed twice every 7 to 10 days and as they get older to feed them once every 7 to 10 days. I also agree your snake should be eating something bigger than fuzzies. You should try hoppers or adult mice. Also know that most pet shops unless they specialize in reptiles don't usually know very much. Good Luck

1. Feed a prey item as large around as the widest part of your snake's body. At 6 months, a ball python should be eating something much larger than a fuzzy mouse.

2. Pythons have slower metabolisms than smaller snakes like corn snakes. Therefore they need to eat less often. I would suggest twice per month until he's full grown (4 years or so) at which point you can cut him back to once per month.

Woah! twice per month? No! I have a 5 month old too. I feed mine 2 fuzzies every 7 days. Once he gets older up the size and only feed once a week.

if you don' know how much to feed it then you can't have much knowledge of snakes. therefore you shouldn't bloody well own one! you shoul have obtained enough knowledge and information about them BEFORE you went and purchased it. because of you lack of knowledge you could be unwittingly neglecting/endangering your pets life.next time THINK before you buy yourself another pet!
