He's originally black but changed due to a few possible reasons. There are few stories about why he changed colour, including but not limited to:
He wanted to be white, or some fireworks exploded on the 'Thriller' set, burning his skin. Therefore he needed a transplant.

The official story, and most likely, is that he has a skin condition called Vitiligo

a Google image search for the virus shows people with similar skin types as MJ. It's important to note that a lot of the whiteness is just make up he uses to avoid discoloration. This has to be true because he used it in his trial and I doubt he could get away with lying about it.

you must live a sheltered life, Michael Jackson is black, he has a skin disease that caused his skin to loose pigment, but even after that, wouldn't you be able to figure it out since Janet is dark skinned, and all 4 of the other Jacksons are as well? And PLEASE do not go around saying that he bleached his skin, or isn't proud of being black because he is and that is probably the one thing that hurts him the most is people saying he doesn't want to be black.

he is a black man. The reason who is so white in complexion is because he suffers from a skin disease called vetiligo. At least, that is what i have been told. He didn't always like the way he looks now. He looked black when he was a kid.

The argument remains open as to why his skin's white: he's claimed to suffer from vitiligo, and his publicist has said that it's a side-affect from a medication he was on at some point. Complete vitiligo as a natural condition is unlikely, seeing as the trademark of vitiligo is PATCHES of miscolored skin. So if we believe him, it's more likely that he either had complete vitiligo caused by medication, or he had natural/(incomplete) medication caused vitiligo and had the rest of his skin lightened for cosmetic reasons (which I don't fault him for ... he is in the public eye, after all)

However, the fact that he really wants to be peter pan has also been cited as a reason (i.e "Neverland Ranch"). I don't really buy this, but there are people who believe it wholeheartedly.
- It should be noted that the most probable reason for his weird nose is because he had inherited his father's nose ... the self-mutilation (of sorts) probably stems from his desire to not be like his (supposedly abusive) father.

He's actually yellow! He's turned himself into a caricature! Too much surgery, he looks plastic! He's really ugly now! As for white or black - well, we know he "was" black, but his whiteness is probably manufactured as well! I'm sure he's had skin bleaching done!
