I can only see a grey screen on start up with a square window with a happy face in it. Nothing is responding. I put my start up disc/boot up and it askes questions, but the computer won't let me answer them. What to do?

It means you have an ancient Mac that wasn't all that great when it was new. 90% of the motherboards in those things are gone.

It means the computer can't find it's internal start-up disk. Try starting from your disc version (while holding the "C" key when booting) and run disk utilities to see if it finds any problems. Otherwise, you'll need to do a clean install of the OS. It's a software, not a motherboard problem.
